One of our most recognisable Butterflies, the Small Tortoiseshell has had a particularly bad time of things in recent years, with numbers falling dramatically. However, taking my garden as a snapshot of their situation, things may be improving a little. This last few years I have noticed a steady increase in numbers, possibly helped by my efforts to encourage some good patches of Stinging Nettle in sunny spots. Nettles are the preferred foodplant for the caterpillars.
