Orange-tips are the first Butterfly to emerge in Spring in my part of the world. Other species you may happen to see on a warm, early Spring day will have overwintered. Only the males have the distinctive orange tips to their wings, and they can only really be seen when the wings are open. They are often seen around Lady’s Smock (Cuckoo Flower), which is the caterpillar foodplant.
This female was sunning itself on Hazel leaves.
