The Painted Lady is a large Butterfly, a migrant and a very powerful flier. Each year, it spreads northwards from North Africa, the Middle East, and central Asia, recolonising mainland Europe and reaching the UK and Ireland. In some years it can be incredibly abundant, other years I only see a handful of individuals. This one was resting amongst heather on an overcast day.
