Goldfinch on early Spring blossom.
The goldfinch is a specialist seed feeder. Its fine beak is perfectly adapted to extracting seeds from plants such as thistles and teasels. One of its earliest recorded local names is ‘Thisteltuige’, an Anglo-Saxon name from the 8th century meaning thistle-tweaker.
