The tiny Common Blue is the most widespread of the UK’s blue butterflies, although like most species it’s not exactly ‘common’ these days. They like to roost high up on grass stalks and the very bright blue males can often be seen defending their small territories, flying out to repel intruders and often returning to the same perch.
This individual was perched on a grass seedhead with a backdrop of Hawkbit flowers, early one June morning.
